I am pleased to share our new paper published in Computers & Security:
“Informal control responses to information security policy violations: A factorial survey on insurance employees’ moral licensing of insider threats”
Together with Nils Siegfried and Nane Winkler, we examined why employees may tolerate information security policy (ISP) violations—particularly when colleagues are highly competent, have a spotless record, hold higher status, or when the violation seems to benefit the team.
Our results show that informal controls can both help reduce insider threats and unintentionally reinforce them if cognitive biases are not addressed.
For researchers, the study offers insights into moral licensing in security contexts.
For practitioners, it highlights the importance of aligning policies with organizational goals, engaging influential employees, and providing training to strengthen informal controls and encourage employees to address violations.

What does this mean for our students?
From June 1st, students of our chair (who attended at least one DIE course) can apply for two of the scholarships awarded annually. The aim is to overcome social obstacles, recognize potential and provide targeted support.

Dear Students,

Due to a research sabbatical, the DIE Chair will not be offering any courses this summer semester (SS2025).

Our courses will be available again as usual from the winter semester 2025/2026.

Until then, we wish you good luck in your studies!

At the end of March, the Chair took part in the conference “Innovative - Excellent - Visible: Women in Science, Business and Society” in Berlin, which was organized by the meta project 'Innovative Women in Focus' (meta-IFiF).

There, we presented the topic “Bias in AI Systems in the Context of Digital Innovation, Transformation, and Entrepreneurship (DITE)” and highlighted in particular the visibility of female digital innovators in Large Language Models (LLMs).
