Participatory Research

As a “Bürgeruniversität” (Citizens’ University), MUHS strives to bring science and society together for the purpose of exchange. One key component of this is the active involvement of citizens, groups and organisations from outside academia in research. This is known as participatory research. Citizen science is currently perhaps the best-known form of participatory research.

Participatory research opens up new perspectives and promotes the social relevance of research as well as dialogue between science and society. It makes science more democratic, transparent and inclusive – and improves the quality of scientific findings through diverse forms of knowledge, a more comprehensive data basis and greater evaluation capacities. At the same time, it enables members of civil society to experience new learning spaces, contribute their own questions and interests, and play a role in social developments. This in turn strengthens trust between science and society, and helps break down barriers.

In order to boost participatory research, MUHS supports its researchers via regular calls for proposals under the “Bürgeruniversität in der Forschung” (Citizens’ University in Research) funding programme and tailored advice provided by the Public Engagement Unit.
