Application from EU/EEA citizens and “Bildungsinländer” (non-German applicants with a German university entrance qualification/degree from a German university)

Applications for study programmes with unrestricted admission

1.           Proof of university entrance qualification

When applying, EU/EEA citizens must upload their certificates from their home country (original language version plus a German, English or French translation). If you have attended a Preparatory College (Studienkolleg) in Germany, you must submit the certificate from the university entrance assessment test together with the Transcript of Records including grades and subjects. Even if you have taken the university entrance assessment test in Germany, it counts as an international (not German!) university entrance qualification.

2.           Proof of language proficiency

In addition to the university entrance qualification, you must also provide proof of German language proficiency for German-language study programmes. You can find an overview of recognised language qualifications here. You can also submit the certificate from the university entrance assessment test (min. grade of “adequate” in the exam subject “German”) as proof of language proficiency. 

Applications for subjects with local admission restrictions (ONC subjects)/Dialogue-oriented Service Procedure (DoSV) subjects

• Applicants from EU/EEA countries,
• non-EU citizens with a university entrance qualification from an EU country,
• those who have the same status as German nationals pursuant to the Rules for the Allocation of Study Places of North Rhine-Westphalia (Vergabeverordnung NRW) Art. 1 (2), [Link]
• “Bildungsinländer” and
• holders of a non-German university entrance qualification who have German citizenship (even if they have dual citizenship) 

should apply for ONC subjects/DoSV subjects in the same way as German applicants, namely exclusively and directly to the University via the online application portal.

The following documents must be submitted with your application:

• Recognised proof of German language proficiency (you can find an overview of recognised language qualifications for German here or, if the study programme is conducted in a language other than German, proof of proficiency in the language required for the study programme
  • Certificates from your home country (original language version plus a German, English or French translation). If you have attended a Preparatory College in Germany, you must submit the certificate from the university entrance assessment test together with the Transcript of Records including grades and subjects. 

“Bildungsinländer” and German nationals with a university entrance qualification acquired abroad do not have to submit proof of German language proficiency.

It is usually not possible to postpone admission to the following semester, as the admission is only valid for the semester for which you applied.

Applications for study programmes with national admission restrictions (Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy)

• Applicants from EU/EEA countries,
• those who have the same status as German nationals pursuant to the Rules for the Allocation of Study Places of North Rhine-Westphalia (Vergabeverordnung NRW) Art. 1 (2), [Link]
• “Bildungsinländer” and
• holders of a non-German university entrance qualification who have German citizenship (even if they have dual citizenship) 

should apply as new students (first subject-related semester) for Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy in the same way as German applicants, namely online to the University Admissions Foundation (Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung), 44128 Dortmund, Germany (www.hochschulstart.de – German only).

If you gain admission, you only have to upload recognised proof of German language proficiency (you can find an overview of recognised language qualifications here on enrolment. “Bildungsinländer” and German nationals with a non-German university entrance qualification do not have to submit proof of German language proficiency.

Applicants for the first subject-related semester for the Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy study programmes are excluded from the award procedure if they are already enrolled as students in the selected study programme at a German university at the time of application. Applications for the first subject-related semester for Medicine/State Examinations are not possible if, at the time of application, the clinical examination has already been completed or the first stage of the medical licence examination has been credited as a result of academic performance to date. In these cases, applications can only be submitted for the clinical semesters.

The Test for Medical Studies (TMS) is a selection criterion in the majority of admission quotas for the Medicine and Dentistry study programmes. You can find further information here.

When applying for a master’s study programme, you must upload the degree certificate from the bachelor’s study programme and the Transcript of Records including grades and subjects (original language version plus a German, English or French translation).

In the case of German-language master’s study programmes, you must also upload recognised proof of German language proficiency. You can find an overview of recognised language qualifications here.

If the master’s study programme is conducted in a language other than German, proof of proficiency in the language required for the master’s study programme must be submitted with your application. (Link)

When applying for a PhD programme, the following documents must be submitted: 

• Authorisation from the Dean’s Office
• Confirmation of academic supervision from your doctoral supervisor
• Proof of your university entrance qualification –  certificates from your home country (original language version plus a German, English or French translation) must be submitted
• In the case of a German-language PhD programme: recognised proof of German language proficiency (LINK) 

In the case of a PhD programme conducted in a language other than German: The required language skills are already checked and certified by the Dean’s Office

When applying for a higher subject-related semester, recognition of academic performance to date from the corresponding department must be submitted together with the other documents on application.

If you are already enrolled at MUHS and simply want to switch to a different study programme, a so-called change of subject is realised. Irrespective of whether the new study programme has unrestricted or restricted admission, you must apply for admission again as described above.
