Intensive preparatory German courses for refugees

MUHS is again offering intensive preparatory German courses in the summer semester (from February ) and in the winter semester  (from July) within the framework of the “NRWege ins Studium” programme (German only) for refugees with good prospects to remain and a university entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung – HZB). The German courses are free of charge and conclude with an exam, which enables you to start a degree in Germany (“German as a foreign language” test (TestDaF), “German language university entrance exam for foreign students” (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang – DSH) or telc certificate).

The application period for German courses runs from october 2025.

Application and admission procedure:

First of all, please complete the online application and send the following documents (photo, scan, in one document) by e-mail to refugees(at)university.marienhospital-clinic.de for review (incomplete documents unfortunately cannot be accepted):

  • Online application (possible from october 2025 on)
  • ID (front and reverse)
  • Certificate from your last language course (at least B1)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • School leaving certificate (original language version and German translation)
  • University degree certificate with overview of subjects and Transcript of Records, if you have already completed a degree (original language version and German translation)
  • University entrance exam, if you have taken this (original language version and German translation)

Important: The university entrance qualification (HZB) will only be checked with regard to participation in the German course. There will be no preliminary ruling on whether this qualification is appropriate for your planned course of study and the qualification will be reviewed again when you apply for a course of study.

If you are admitted to a German course by MUHS, we will notify you and invite you to a placement test to ensure the best possible match with our course levels. Depending on your personal course level, you will be assigned to a course either on campus or at a partner language school (in the centre of Gelsenkirchen). The German courses on campus are held on site. The German courses at the language school are held in a hybrid format (3 days online and 2 on site). Depending on the level, the courses are held in the morning or afternoon. Due to the on-site days involved, precedence will be given to applicants from Gelsenkirchen and the surrounding region in the selection procedure. Participants unfortunately cannot influence course assignment. However, you are welcome to state a preference for one of the two study formats, depending on your personal situation. Please make use of our official consultation sessions to ask any questions.
