University entrance qualification (anabin database)

You can find out whether your certificates from your home country entitle you to study in Germany in this database (German only): https://anabin.kmk.org

Please observe the following information when applying for Dialogue-oriented Service Procedure (DoSV) study programmes (see also).

  1. Proof of university entrance qualification

When applying, non-EU citizens must submit preliminary review documentation (Vorprüfungsdokumentation – VPD) issued by uni-assist (www.uni-assist.de/en/). It is essential that the VPD is issued for your application to Marien University Hospital & School Gelsenkirchen. A uni-assist assessment report is not sufficient. If the university entrance assessment test (Feststellungsprüfung) has been completed, it must also be submitted to uni-assist for the VPD. Accordingly, the certificates from your home country no longer have to be submitted when applying to Marien University Hospital & School Gelsenkirchen as they have already been reviewed by uni-assist. In order to obtain a VPD, you should contact uni-assist in good time (at least 8 weeks before the application deadline at the University).

Exceptions:

  1. Non-EU citizens with a university entrance qualification from an EU country should apply as non-EU citizens, but do not need a VPD when applying for subjects with unrestricted admission and subjects with national admission restrictions. Instead of the VPD, certificates from your home country (original language version plus a German, English or French translation) should be submitted.
  1. Non-EU citizens with a university entrance qualification from an EU country and those who have the same status as German nationals pursuant to the Rules for the Allocation of Study Places of North Rhine-Westphalia (Vergabeverordnung NRW) Art. 1 (2) [Link] should apply for subjects with local admission restrictions (ONC subjects)/DoSV subjects in the same way as EU citizens/German nationals and therefore do not need to submit a VPD from uni-assist. In this case, certificates from your home country should be submitted instead (original language version plus a German, English or French translation) – see the page “Applications from EU/EEA citizens and “Bildungsinländer” (non-German applicants with a German university entrance qualification/degree from a German university)”.
  1. Proof of language proficiency

In addition to the university entrance qualification, you must also provide proof of German language proficiency for German-language study programmes. You can find an overview of recognised language qualifications here. You can also submit the certificate from the university entrance assessment test (min. grade of “adequate” in the exam subject “German”) as proof of language proficiency.

If the study programme is conducted in a language other than German, proof of proficiency in the language required for the study programme must be submitted with your application.

Note on study programmes with national admission restrictions (Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy):

Applicants for the first subject-related semester for the Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy study programmes are excluded from the award procedure if they are already enrolled as students in the selected study programme at a German university at the time of application. Applications for the first subject-related semester for Medicine/State Examinations are not possible if, at the time of application, the clinical examination has already been completed or the first stage of the medical licence examination has been credited as a result of academic performance to date. In these cases, applications can only be submitted for the clinical semesters.

When applying for a master’s study programme, the following documents must be submitted:

  • Degree certificate from the bachelor’s study programme (original language version plus a German, English or French translation)
  • Transcript of Records including grades and subjects (original language version plus a German, English or French translation)
  • Recognised proof of language proficiency:
    • In the case of German-language master’s study programmes: recognised proof of German language proficiency (LINK)
    • In the case of master’s study programmes conducted in a language other than German: proof of proficiency in the language required for the master’s study programme
  • When applying for a master’s degree programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences or the Medical Faculty, a VPD from uni-assist (https://www.uni-assist.de/en/) must also be submitted. It is essential that the VPD is issued for your application to Marien University Hospital & School Gelsenkirchen. A uni-assist assessment report is not sufficient. In order to obtain a VPD, you should contact uni-assist in good time (at least 8 weeks before the application deadline at the University).

When applying for a PhD programme, the following documents must be submitted:

  • Authorisation from the Dean’s Office
  • Confirmation of academic supervision from your doctoral supervisor
  • Proof of your university entrance qualification – certificates from your home country (original language version plus a German, English or French translation) must be submitted
  • In the case of a German-language PhD programme: recognised proof of German language proficiency
  • In the case of a PhD programme conducted in a language other than German: The required language skills are already checked and certified by the Dean’s Office

When applying for higher subject-related semesters, recognition of academic performance to date from the corresponding department must be submitted together with the other documents on application.

You can find information on applying for higher subject-related semesters with restricted admission on the “Application for higher semesters” website: www.university.marienhospital-clinic.de/en/studium/bewerbung-und-einschreibung/bewerbungsportal/higher-terms

If you are already enrolled at MUHS and simply want to switch to a different study programme, a so-called change of subject is realised. Irrespective of whether the new study programme has unrestricted or restricted admission, you must apply for admission again as described above.

General information:

  1. Notes on potentially incorrect entries in the application procedure and special features:

An IB (International Baccalaureate) does not count as a German university entrance qualification, even if it was acquired in Germany.

A university entrance assessment test from a Preparatory College (Studienkolleg) counts as an international university entrance qualification which entitles you to start a degree in Germany (even if the university entrance assessment test was taken at a Preparatory College in Germany).

Please ensure you enter the correct nationality on your application. Providing false information may lead to exclusion from the process and revocation of admission/rejection of enrolment.

If you acquired your university entrance qualification outside Germany for a study programme in Germany, please enter either “Other university entrance qualification acquired abroad (subject-related entrance qualification)” or “Other university entrance qualification acquired abroad (general university entrance qualification)” under the point “Type of university entrance qualification”.

You should only enter “University entrance qualification at a German school abroad (general university entrance qualification)” if you have acquired a German Abitur (school-leaving qualification permitting university admission) at a German school outside Germany. If you do not have a German Abitur but wrongly enter that you have, this will lead to exclusion from the process and revocation of admission/rejection of enrolment.

Chinese applicants must upload the certificate issued by the Academic Evaluation Centre (Akademische Prüfstelle – APS), which can be contacted via the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Beijing.

Vietnamese applicants must upload the certificate issued by the Academic Evaluation Centre at the German Embassy in Hanoi.

Indian applicants must upload the certificate issued by the Academic Evaluation Centre at the German Embassy in New Delhi.

  1. Notes on the award procedure for applications for a subject with restricted admission
  • Following review of the application documents, a selection procedure is conducted. The nationality and average grade achieved (can be found in the VPD to be submitted) are taken as the criteria for this procedure.
  • Additional qualifications/activities such as the Test for Academic Studies (TestAS), internships/traineeships or other criteria such as references or waiting period are not taken into account.
  • Please note that special case requests within the framework of applications are only relevant for German nationals, EU citizens, “Bildungsinländer” and those who have the same status as German nationals.
  • It is usually not possible to postpone admission to the following semester, as the admission is only valid for the semester for which you applied.
