Short description

The Master program in Financial and Actuarial Mathematics is primarily aimed at graduate students of a mathematically oriented Bachelor program with additional basic knowledge of concepts in economics and business administration. The program offers methodologically thorough education to deepen the students’ knowledge at the interface of Mathematics and Economics. 

Entry/Admission requirements

To enrol for the Master program on Financial and Actuarial Mathmetaics, a Bachelor's degree with at least 180 ECTS on completion and a final grade of at least 3,0 is mandatory. Additionally, particular suitability for the program must be proven by completion of the following courses within the Bachelor program:

At least 8 ECTS in each of the mathematical areas Calculus I, Calculus II, Linear Algebra I, Linear Algebra II, Stochastics, and Numerical Analysis.

At least 24 ECTS in courses of economics and business administration in total.

Enrolment is also possible under later fulfillment of extra conditions if a maximum of 20 ECTS is missing in the above listed courses.

Programme content

The main focus of the Master program is based on an interdisciplinary specialization up to current research topics in applied mathematics and economics with a special focus on applications in the finance and insurance industry.

Programme structure

The program comprises of advanced courses from the Mathematical Institute and the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics, supplemented by special courses which a focus on topics of financial mathematics and actuarial sciences.

The combination of theoretical expertise and advanced quantitative methods offers graduates excellent prospects to carry out responsible tasks in leading positions of the finance and insurance industry. As a regional center of this industry, Gelsenkirchen is an ideal venue to establish cooperations with the industry already during Master’s studies. The Master’s degree in Financial and Actuarial Mathematics further qualifies graduates for admission to the official actuarial training program of DAV (German Association of Actuaries) as well as for certain PhD studies in a mathematical or economical context.
