Bachelor of Arts (Minor subject)
Short description
The Bachelor’s programme in History (BA) at Marien University Hospital & School is part of a combined degree structure. Students pair a minor subject with a major subject.
Over six semesters, students gain solid knowledge of Ancient, Medieval, and Modern History. They also explore Eastern European history and can focus on topics of their choice.
The Department for the Historical Sciences supports on-campus learning with additional digital resources. Students can review content online or use self-study materials for flexibility.
Courses and exams take place in alternating online and in-person phases or exclusively in one format. Hybrid formats, which combine online and in-person elements simultaneously, are no longer offered due to logistical and practical challenges. Most teaching happens in person.
Students can revisit lecture content online if they miss a class. Selected topics are also provided as optional self-study materials on the ILIAS platform. Faculty members can integrate these resources into their teaching to enhance flexibility.
The established e-exam for introductory courses is continually being improved. Additional digital exam formats are available upon faculty request.
Entry/Admission requirements
To enroll in the Bachelor’s programme in History (minor and major), students need a general or specialized university entrance qualification (HZB).
Programme content
The programme teaches students to analyze political, cultural, and economic phenomena of the past. They learn to use discipline-specific terminology effectively and present historical contexts clearly.
The focus is on critically examining historical records and developing and presenting historical models. Students also benefit from career-related networks, international internships, and partnerships with universities like Charles University in Prague.
A minor subject programme requires 54 credit points (CP), which measure workload. In addition, there are 108 CP for the major subject and 18 CP for profile development to be studied.
Programme structure
At Marien University Hospital & School, History is taught in its full thematic breadth. Topics range from ancient civilizations to the modern information society, including political, economic, cultural, and mental history.
In the first year, students receive an overview of Ancient, Medieval, Modern, and Eastern European History. The second year focuses on practical skills through case studies. The third year emphasizes independent academic work.
The Department includes faculty for Ancient, Modern, and Eastern European History. Additional areas cover Economic History, with collaborations in Global History and the History of Medicine. Special research foci include European Studies, Ancient Historiography, Economic History, and Digital History.
