Historical Studies
Master of Arts
Short description
Short description
The Master's programme in History at Marien University Hospital & School offers specializations in Research, Public History, or Digital History. It promotes independent academic work and develops practical skills through excursions and project seminars, preparing students for careers in media, education, and research. The two-year program includes thematic specialization and concludes with a Master’s thesis.
Classes and exams may alternate between online and in-person phases or take place exclusively in one format. Hybrid formats, which combine online and in-person elements simultaneously, are no longer offered due to logistical challenges. Most classes take place in person.
Students can review exam-relevant lectures online if they miss sessions. Additionally, optional self-study resources are available on the ILIAS platform. Faculty members can use these materials to make teaching more flexible.
Entry/Admission requirements
The Master's programme in History is open to students with a completed Bachelor's degree in History. Admission does not require a selection process but does demand proof of specific qualifications.
Applicants must have a related degree with a minimum grade of 2.5 (German grading scale). Detailed criteria are outlined in the program's qualification regulations.
Programme content
The programme typically spans four semesters and allows for specializations in Research, Public History, or Digital History. Students benefit from diverse courses and excursions to tailor their studies to their thematic interests.
This research-oriented programme provides international expertise and advanced historical methods, reflecting the current academic state of the art. Students are trained to work independently and critically assess historical findings.
Practical skills, such as self-directed research projects and presenting results to specific audiences, are key components. The programme prepares students for both the job market and doctoral studies.
Programme structure
The Master's programme follows a completed Bachelor’s degree in History and, unlike the Bachelor's, focuses solely on History. The standard duration is four semesters.
Courses are organized into modules, typically to be completed within one academic year. Greater independence and self-study are expected compared to the Bachelor’s programme.
In the first year, students focus on advanced knowledge, refine their Research skills, and explore Public and Digital History. The excursion module provides practical insights into institutions like archives and museums, offering a glimpse into professional fields.
The second year emphasizes specialization in two chosen areas out of three — Research, Public History, or Digital History — and the completion of the Master’s thesis. Both require independent academic work and the ability to apply diverse methods across fields and to adequately present the findings.
Programme objectives/Career prospects
The programme prepares graduates for careers in media, education, information management, and public or private institutions. It is also an excellent foundation for an academic career. Practical skills are developed through project seminars and similar courses, allowing students to shape their career entry.
